UN sanctions: registration cancelled for eight North Korean vessels

Field Updates

Earlier this month the Union of the Comoros, in the Indian Ocean, cancelled the registration of the vessel Petrel 8, one of the ships the UN Security Council’s North Korea sanctions committee had asked member states to bar from their ports.

NK News, a specialist North Korea outlet, recently reported that it had received confirmation from the Administration of the Union of the Comoros that the step was taken on the 13th.

The Comoros said that all of Petrel 8’s licences were cancelled with effect from the 13th, and that it had notified the International Maritime Organization and other maritime bodies.

On the 4th, the UN sanctions committee had imposed an international port entry ban on Petrel 8 along with Hao Fan 6, Tong San 2 and Jie Shun, under Resolution 2371. It was the first time the committee had barred North Korean vessels from ports, and it did so because the ships had carried coal and other goods North Korea is banned from exporting.
