UN sanctions committee: no country has imported North Korean coal for five months

Field Updates

No country has reported importing North Korean coal to the United Nations for five consecutive months.

According to the website of the UN Security Council’s North Korea sanctions committee, not a single UN member state reported importing coal from North Korea during July and August, as reported by Radio Free Asia. The committee’s figures show that after the number of countries reporting imports of North Korean coal first fell to zero in April, there were no imports at all through to August.

Publication of Chinese customs data last month raised questions about whether China had resumed imports of North Korean coal. China, which had said through its customs administration in September that it imported some 1.63 million tonnes of coal from North Korea in August, was also found not to have reported any such imports to the United Nations.
